'Croydon Life' dined in the newly refurbished Malaysian/Singaporean restaurant Kelong

Having heard of Kelong's speciality in seafood, I couldn't wait to sink my teeth into their marine meals, Andy on the other hand was looking forward to the curries, while Sinem had her mind set on a vegetarian course and with a specially designed vegetarian only menu presented to her, we commenced our food order.

We started by ordering a light-sized portion of chicken and vegetarian satays (meat/ veg skewers marinated with spices and served with onion, cucumber and a sweet and spicy peanut based sauce) and as a new sampler of truly South East Asian treats, I was particularly intrigued by how the different flavours on my plate came together quite well to produce a uniquely interesting taste. Along with the satays, we ordered some curried minced beef spring rolls, curried potato puff and sweet corn fritters. With the bar set high from the flavoursome starters, Andy and I diverted into the seafood menu, sharing scallops with king prawns complete with black bean sauce and served with a soya garlic ginger wine dip, plus a whole steam f illet of sea bass with a choice of black bean sauce, ginger and Tom Yam spicy tomato sauce.

Sinem made an excellent choice in ordering a large portion of plain fried noodles with mixed vegetables at just £3.95, with a side dish of stir fried mushroom and baby corn (in an oyster sauce) and a crispy bean curd (a fresh deep fried curd in a divine sweet and sour sauce). In addition to this she requested the Singaporean fried carrot cake- far from eating carrot, as the name might suggest, this meal is one of many Kelong cookouts reveled in the Singapore Food Festival held in July. They are small rectangular rice flour cakes, fried with radish, scrambled egg, chopped spring onions and chye po. Another is the Roti Prata, often served alongside spicy curry gravy, served with a delicious lamb curry, cooked to your taste and accompanied with a side salad. Most of the meals mentioned in this review were taken from the main Kelong menu, there is also of course the vegetarian only menu, a 'specials set' menu, the two course meals for £5.00 with the option of a starter and main, a varied desserts menu and my favourite (which I'm def initely trying next time we visit Kelong), the 'set menu meals' a choice of Chinese, Malaysian, Indian or European cuisine, three course meals at only £19.50.
